Storm is rapidly intensifying to Category 4, could be Category 5 when it hits U.S.
The American Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle is the forecasted target of Hurricane Delta now in the Gulf of Mexico.
Before targeting the U.S. later this week, the rapidly strengthening Hurricane Delta is taking aim at the resort hotspot of Mexico’s northeastern Yucatan Peninsula including Cancun and Cozumel. It is now a Category 4 storm that forecasters label as “dangerous.”
One meteorologist said, “We think Louisiana is in the crosshairs.” The storm is expected to intensify once it heads back into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. She also said, “All of the Gulf Coast states need to monitor this.”
The National Hurricane Center is warning of extremely dangerous storm surge raising water levels by as much as 6 to 9 feet, accompanied by large and dangerous waves and flash flooding inland. It is expected to reach the U.S. late Friday or early Saturday. When the storm does make landfall in the U.S., it will be the tenth storm to do so this season, breaking the record for storms to directly strike the continental United States. Delta is the 25th named storm of the not-yet-over 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.
